ZEELAND -(Allen Burke, Emmons County Record) - The selection of the Zeeland City Hall to the National Register of Historic Places will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Sun., June 25, at the hall in Zeeland, N.D.

Construction of the hall was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in 1936. The one-story Colonial Revival style building is 58 feet by 98 feet with a bell tower. Although it shows some signs of its age, it has most of its original features.

Joyce Scherr, a local historian, and Dr. Tom Isern, professor of history and university distinguished professor at N.D. State University, Fargo, were instrumental in getting the national distinction for the historic hall.

Featured speakers at the event will be Kyle “Bubba” Schweigert and Dr. Isern.

Schweigert is a native of Zeeland and the grandson of John Schweigert, the foreman for the WPA project. He is head football coach at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks.

Michael Miller, director, Germans from Russia Heritage Collection (GRHC), NDSU Libraries, will be attending the event. The GRHC will have information tables and displays at the hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A free lunch of knoepfle and sausage will be served at noon at the hall.
