The Veterans Day ceremony Sunday at the state Capitol began with bells that tolled 11 times as part of a national commemoration called Bells of Peace. The names of nearly 1,400 soldiers from North Dakota who lost their lives in World War I were read at the All Veterans Memorial.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative is hopeful that a financially troubled synthetic natural gas plant in North Dakota could break even by 2024 following staff cuts and other cost-saving measures. The Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah has improved its financial standing compared to six months ago, according to Basin Electric CEO Paul Sukut. Plant operator and Basin subsidiary Dakota Gasification Co. has endured several years of losses.
A Mandan police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing after he shot a man. The Morton County State’s Attorney’s Office says it will not file charges against officer Leo Belgarde after an investigation into the Oct. 9 incident by the state crime bureau. Authorities say they were trying to arrest 26-year-old Jared Galusha on warrants when he drove a vehicle in the direction of officers. Belgarde fired two shots, one of which struck Galusha, who survived the shot.
A woman has been sentenced to a year of probation after accidentally firing a gunshot into the occupied apartment below her in Min. Authorities say 28-year-old Jillian Eldridge, of Keller, Texas, was cleaning her boyfriend’s handgun on April 9 when it fired. She told police she did not think it was loaded. The bullet came within a few feet of a man in the apartment below. The man was not injured.
An electrical fire at a Jamestown home Monday was extinguished before causing major damage, according to Jamestown Fire Department. The fire began in the area of an overheating wall thermostat on the home’s front porch. JFD arrived 5 minutes after the call came in and were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The family was able to remain in the home as there was no other danger, according to Capt. Frank Schumacher of JFD. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Schumacher said.
