BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum presents legislators with his proposed budget on Wednesday. It’s expected to call for restrained spending and refilling savings accounts that have helped patch up tattered budgets in recent years. The state has more money than expected due to record drilling, but the state’s biggest businesses – oil and agriculture – have challenges.
SOUTH ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – A key congressional voice on agriculture says he’s optimistic that lawmakers can pass a new farm bill next week. U.S Rep. Collin Peterson is the top Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee and is expected to become chairman next year. Peterson told reporters in South St. Paul Tuesday that it’s not the best possible farm bill, but it’s the best bill that’s politically possible.
DENVER (AP) – A utility serving 3.6 million electricity customers in eight states says it will try to eliminate all its carbon emissions from electrical generation by 2050. The Colorado Sun says Xcel Energy made the announcement Tuesday in Denver. CEO Ben Fowke says the company set the goal as a response to climate change. Xcel is based in Minneapolis and has customers in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin.
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A man who police say was high on drugs when he stripped naked and climbed into the holy water font during Mass at a North Dakota church has pleaded not guilty to an indecent exposure charge. Authorities say 21-year-old Zachary Burdick also performed a lewd act as he walked down the aisle of the Spirit of Life Catholic Church in Mandan on Oct. 9 KFYR-TV reports that Burdick pleaded not guilty Monday to felony indecent exposure and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. A trial date has not been set.
MINOT, N.D. (The Jamestown Sun) – A rollover crash about three miles northwest of Minot Air Force Base killed a 53-year-old Glenburn man Monday, Dec. 3. The North Dakota Highway Patrol said Edward Miller, who was driving a 2002 Ford Ranger east on 74th Street, lost control of the vehicle before it overturned in a ditch. Miller died at the scene, the patrol said. The crash happened about 4:45 p.m.
