17 planes are on the move with 800 people as they will temporarily go to Grand Forks Air Force Base in northeastern North Dakota to help the construction project at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota.
According to South Dakota Searchlight, this move of the B1-1B Lancers and personnel will last about 10 months. The Air Force is preparing for a B-21 Raider at the Ellsworth Base in South Dakota, which is a new long-range strike bomber and is set to replace the B-1s. Earlier this year, several of Ellsworth’s B-1 bombers relocated to Dyess Air Force base in Texas.
The B-1Bs do not carry nuclear weapons, and the Grand Forks base does not have nuclear weapons storage capacity anymore.
