Fargo City Commissioners vote against Operation Safe Fargo

PAYTON GALL — Fargo city commissioner Michelle Turnberg’s proposed plan, “operation safe Fargo,” aimed to address the city’s growing homelessness crisis.

She proposed to move the warming center to the Fargo Civic Center, as well as doing checks at the door for people with warrants out for drug charges. However, the proposal was voted down by the City commission on Monday. While the Commission acknowledged the urgency of the issue, they expressed concerns about the plan’s potential negative impacts on vulnerable individuals, particularly those struggling with addiction. Mayor Tim Mahoney and Commissioner Denise Kolpack promised to present an alternative plan before Christmas, one that would involve the FM Coalition to End Homelessness.

The city’s current approach to homelessness, including a ban on public camping with exceptions, has been criticized for its limitations. As the winter months bear down, the city faces increasing pressure to find effective solutions to the growing problem of homelessness in the area.
