Former longtime New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has found another job, and it won’t be on an NFL football field, it will be on a COLLEGE football field.
Just this morning it was announced that the 6-time Super Bowl winning coach will be heading to Chapel Hill to become the next head coach of the University of North Carolina Tarheels.
UNC was looking for a new head coach after they fired former head coach Mack Brown after a disappointing 6-6 season finishing 13th in the ACC Conference standings.
The rumors spread like wildfire when the news broke Belichick had interviewed for the position, but not a lot believed it would actually happen, thinking Belichick would be making his return to the NFL.
Belichick was asked on the Pat McAfee show if the rumors were true and how much interest Belichick actually had in the position, which he replied he did, and that his plan for the Tarheels is to become a pipeline for athletes to make it in the NFL, as well as preparing athletes for life after their football career is over.
Another tidbit mentioned in the rumor mill was that Belichicks son, Steve, whose currently the defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies will be joining him, presumably in a defensive role, and was also mentioned to be the next head coach in line at UNC when Bill’s time there is up. There is no confirmation if this was a stipulation in Belichicks hiring.
Belichick as we know, made his name in the NFL first as a defensive coordinator winning a couple Super Bowls with the New York Giants, and of course building one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history with the New England Patriots. Belichick as a head coach held a career record of 302-165 in the regular season, 31-13 in the postseason, and winning the 6 super bowls including a repeat in 2004 and 2005.
Will this gamble work out? Will Belichick bring his system to the college ranks and build another dynasty in North Carolina? Or will this be the reverse of what typically happens when College Coaches venture to the NFL and ultimately don’t pan out? We will see in 2025 when Belichick walks the sideline yet again, but instead of in Foxborough, it will be in Chapel Hill.
