North Dakota lawmakers rejected an attempt at legalizing online sports betting on Wednesday.
The resolution failed 63-24, and the majority of lawmakers backed the concerns about the detrimental effects of gambling. Opponents of the bill cited studies that showed that online sports betting is detrimental to college-age men, with the North Dakota University System and North Dakota Student Association testifying against the bill. Supporters of sports betting have often cited economic benefits of allowing online sports betting.
There are 30 states where online sports betting is legal, and sports betting is legal at tribal run casinos in North Dakota, but not online.
