Washington Elementary School in Jamestown will be closing after this school year ends.
The Jamestown Public School Board voted unanimously to shut down the school, pointing to funding issues that they say can allow effective operation of only four elementary schools in the district. Declining enrollment has also been an issue.
It’s unclear if there will be a reduction in staff and faculty, but previous comments from Superintendent Rob Lech indicate that is not a priority.
The Board also indicated it’s likely a public funding measure will be brought to voters sometime in the future.
New boundaries for the four elementary schools that will be operational in the school district will be announced in the near future.
