North Dakota House Bill 1475 would require the state to cover meals costs not paid for by federal funding, ensuring that all K-12 students receive meals at no charge.
As it stands, some students qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on income, but the bill would expand eligibility to every student. Supporters feel the measure could help students focus on learning without worrying about meals. Other lawmakers have raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the program and if the state can afford the cost.
If passed through the Legislature, North Dakota students would begin receiving free meals in July 2025.
