Oklahoma National Stockyards at Risk of Closing Down

By Ryan King Feb 4, 2025 | 1:16 PM

The historic Oklahoma National Stockyards, the last major stockyard in a U.S. city, is up for sale with a $27 million price tag, potentially signaling the end of cattle trading in Oklahoma City. Spanning 100 acres along the Oklahoma River, the stockyards sit in a rapidly growing area where new developments, a state-of-the-art NBA arena and a proposed skyscraper, are reshaping the landscape.

While the current owners hope a buyer will continue livestock operations, the land’s prime location makes redevelopment a strong possibility. Declining cattle numbers, rising operational costs, and younger generations uninterested in running the facility have contributed to the decision to sell.

If the stockyards close, it would mark the end of Oklahoma City’s status as a major hub in the livestock industry.
