The USDA announced the layoffs of multiple employees across various agencies, primarily probationary staff as part of a broader workforce reduction by the Trump administration.
The layoffs included 78 contracts, totaling more than 132 million dollars.
Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins emphasized efficiency and restructuring within the department, with the USDA citing a need to optimize its workforce and cut unnecessary contracts.
The move has drawn criticism from unions, arguing that the layoffs are politically motivated rather than performance based. Additionally, Rollins announced a shift away from DEI initiatives within departments while committing to refocusing the USDA on supporting farmers, ranchers, and forestry.
