The North Dakota House has pass a bill calling for the stripping of marriage rights from gay and lesbian couples in the state, and nationwide.
House Concurrent Resolution 3013 says the landmark U.S. Supreme Court Ruling in Obergfell v. Hodges that gave marriage protections to gay and lesbian couples nationwide in 2015 should be overturned. The resolution passed 52-40 after a contentious debate.
Sponsors of the bill, including Republican Representative Bill Tveit, say that marriage rights should be revoked from people in North Dakota based on beliefs that marriage has been solely between a man and a woman.
Those beliefs are contradicted by historians, who say same-sex marriages between men and woman have been happening since at least 8th Century B.C.
Democrat Austin Ross of Fargo blasted the resolution, saying it was not “North Dakota nice” nor “Christian-like.” The resolution now moves to the state Senate.
