The North Dakota House has passed another property tax relief bill.

Republican lawmakers had promised to make changes to the state’s property tax code after a reformative ballot measure was rejected by voters in last fall’s election. House Bill 1176 creates a property tax relief fund, with primary resident credits expanded from $500 to $1,450. The bill also proposes a 3-percent cap on property tax levy increases.

Funding the measure would cost the state about a half a billion dollars, much of that coming from the Legacy Fund.

The bill passed 81-10.

A different property tax reform bill that focusses relief more heavily on the agricultural and commercial sectors passes earlier in this year’s session. The dueling bills will now be debated by the Senate.

Governor Kelly Armstrong signaled his support for the newer bill.
