The bug is biting again.
The Minnesota Twins earned a win on Tuesday night defeating the New York Mets 6-3, and evening out the series after a disappointing Game 1 loss. But it was not earned without a couple of Twins contributors being bitten by the injury bug, with amounts of time missed uncertain… for the moment.
The game started off with an injury, after the first inning and after his first at-bat, Right fielder Matt Wallner was pulled from the game after dealing with tightness in his right hamstring, Wallner would be replaced with the lesser experienced Dashawn Keirsey Jr.
Later on, in the top of the fifth after snagging a tough liner to left, shortstop Carlos Correa was seen trying to stretch his right wrist out, but the discomfort would be too much and Correa would be pulled from the game as well. Brooks Lee would enter the game after not being named a starter for the evening, and it actually worked out in the Twins favor. In the bottom of the seventh, with a 2 run lead, Brooks Lee would bomb a homerun to right field to make the score 6-3, and set the Twins up for their first win of the series.
One minor thing to note after the substitution for Correa, Brooks Lee went to third, and Willie Castro was moved to shortstop. Castro had a busy 9th inning with multiple plays heading his way, and during the inning was seen just like Correa stretching out his wrist and showing some discomfort. Castro did not leave the game but something worth noting if Castro ends up missing a few games.
With the uncertainty of Correas injury, the Twins will need to dig into their depth a little, but one plan may already be ruined, after it was noted during the TV Broadcast that after infielder Jose Miranda was sent back down to Triple-A he was put on the injured list. So Miranda’s availability may be in question as well moving forward.
These injuries stack up after Pablo Lopez was placed on the IL last week after hurting his hamstring against the Royals, and infielder Royce Lewis is still out after a injured hamstring he suffered during a spring training game.
Depth could come in to play as the Twins finish off their series with the Mets today, and will take on the struggling Atlanta Braves this weekend.
