Some campgrounds will be closed this summer due to federal staffing and funding cuts brought forth by DOGE. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will temporarily close or reduce services at multiple recreation areas in North Dakota beginning May 1, due to “seasonal staffing and resource limitations.” Affected North Dakota campgrounds include East Totten Trail, Wolf Creek, Hazelton, Cattail Bay, and partial closure at Beaver Creek. Support services like janitorial, refuse, mowing, and park attendant services will be reduced at these locations. Additionally, powerhouse tours at Garrison Dam will be suspended. Colonel Robert J. Newbauer, Omaha District commander, acknowledged the disruption and thanked the public for their flexibility. The closures, which also affect sites in Nebraska, South Dakota and Montana, aim to ensure visitor safety and protect environmental resources. Campers with existing reservations may receive full refunds through recreation.gov, and the Corps encourages visitors to verify site status before traveling.
