Dickinson High School in North Dakota has announced two finalists to replace its nearly century-old “Midgets” mascot: the Defenders and the Mavericks. The announcement came on Tuesday, following the district’s March decision to retire the controversial name due to inclusivity concerns and competition eligibility issues. After collecting over 850 community submissions, a committee of students, coaches, parents and alumni selected these finalists based on school spirit, branding potential and regional relevance. The district described the Defenders as representing “strength, unity and pride,” while the Mavericks reflect “our region’s bold, independent spirit.” Students in grades 5-12 will vote on May 5-6, with the new mascot announced May 7. The school will keep its orange and black colors as it implements the new identity for the 2025-26 academic year.
