It’s official, North Dakota has signed charter schools into law. Governor Kelly Armstrong has signed Senate Bill 2241, creating North Dakota’s first framework for public charter schools. The legislation passed with strong legislative support and takes effect August 1st. “Expanding school choice is a win-win for North Dakota families and our state’s workforce,” said Armstrong, praising the bill for empowering communities to establish customized learning environments. The new charter schools must operate as part of the public education system, meet state academic standards, and remain open to all students regardless of location or background. North Dakota was previously one of only four states without charter school legislation.
