Pope Francis passed away Easter Monday at the age of 88. The Vatican reports Francis died after a stroke put him into a coma, causing heart failure. North Dakota’s Catholic leadership has issued statements mourning the death of Pope Francis. Bishop David Kagan of the Bismarck Diocese expressed “sympathy at the passing of Our Holy Father” and thanked God for the “humble and merciful leader who served to shepherd the Catholic Church for the past 12 years.” Similarly, Bishop John Folda of the Fargo Diocese stated he was “saddened at the death of Pope Francis” and expressed gratitude for the pontiff’s “joyful preaching of the Gospel and his concern for the poor.” Both bishops asked their communities to join in prayer for the late pope, with Bishop Kagan specifically requesting prayers “for the repose of the soul of this good and faithful servant.”
