As reported by the Grand Forks Herald, Grand Forks law enforcement surrounded the city’s Islamic Center Monday afternoon after receiving reports of an alleged violent crime involving a weapon. Police Chief Jason Freedman stated that officers responded before 3 p.m. Monday, approaching the scene with caution. About a dozen law enforcement vehicles, including a SWAT vehicle, were sent to the scene on 17th Avenue South. Several people have been removed from the building and detained, though as of 3:45 p.m. Monday, authorities had not confirmed if any injuries occurred. Freedman does not believe the incident occurred as a result of prejudice, and believes there is no wider threat to the community. “Things are well-contained, and hopefully we’ll be able to resolve this relatively soon,” he said, while urging the public to avoid the area which remains blocked by police. The investigation continues as officers methodically work to “make sure we have all the puzzle pieces,” Freedman said. Stay tuned for updates on the developing story.
