The North Dakota Senate narrowly voted down a proposed $1 million for a “life education committee” that would have promoted abortion alternatives. The amendment, brought by Sen. Janne Myrdal of Edinburg, failed in a close 23-24 vote. Critics argued the proposal violated legislative procedure since it never received a public hearing in a policy committee. Sen. David Clemens noted the public had no opportunity to speak for or against the funding, while Sen. Brad Bekkedahl agreed proper notice wasn’t given. The Senate did approve other changes to the Office of Management and Budget, including $850,000 for Prairie Public broadcasting tower infrastructure, though not restoring its $1.2 million base funding previously cut by the House. Senators also reduced funding for a proposed state hospital in Jamestown by $45 million, bringing the total to $285 million. The amended budget now returns to the House for a concurrence vote.
