North Dakota State Bison complete spring season with Green & Gold Showcase

On a warmer spring day in Fargo on Friday, the Fargodome filled up with green & gold for North Dakota State’s organized spring scrimmage, the “Green & Gold Showcase.” There was no official score or statistics kept but several offensive and defensive teams took reps at different spots in the field.

“My initial reaction is that we’ve had a good spring,” NDSU head coach Tim Polasek said. “But we’ve got to have a little bit better urgency in trying to win this race to maturity because we’re going to need some younger people to step up and play.”

In the practice, many of the quarterback snaps went to Nebraska native Cole Payton.

“Good, good,” Payton said when speaking about the condition of his shoulder. The Westside high school product played in only eight games for the Bison in 2024 due to a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. “I’ll actually get cleared here next week I think or the week after that. So, it feels normal. I’m feeling good.”

With the spring game over, many fans, coaches and players will turn their eyes to the transfer portal, where thousands of players have been in and out of this cycle. The Bison have already lost key players in the portal, including running back CharMar Brown and defensive tackle Kody Huisman.

“Tuesday night I’ll be hitting the road. I’m going to circle back every Saturday, Sunday, Monday here to be available for a portal recruit,” Polasek said. “There’s going to be some noise now in the recruiting world.”

The Bison will open the regular season on the road in Charleston, South Carolina with a game against The Citadel on August 30.
