As first reported by the Jamestown Sun, Jamestown has canceled aerial mosquito spraying after Vector Disease Control International quoted $36,000 per application. “That’s money we don’t want to spend,” stated Mayor Dwaine Heinrich at the Tuesday Finance Committee meeting. Councilman David Steele noted other North Dakota cities have made similar decisions, finding aerial spraying ineffective as mosquitoes quickly return from rural areas with the first breeze. The city will instead focus on larvicide applications and street-level spraying, funded by the $1.50 monthly vector control fee residents pay on utility bills. This fee generates approximately $347,000 annually for the program that covers chemicals, equipment, and staffing for mosquito testing and control.
