North Dakota lawmakers are considering increasing fuel tax for the first time since 2005. A last-minute amendment to Senate bill 2012 would raise fuel tax by five cents per gallon to 28 cents, which will generate approximately $70 million over the next two years. The House approved this increase Friday with a 61-31 vote. The bill now returns to the Senate for consideration. Supporters call it a “user fee” that would exclusively fund road repairs and construction, noting that out-of-state travelers would offer a significant contribution to the revenue. Opponents argue the state should find infrastructure funding elsewhere, calling it “a bad look;” questioning why the state should add a consumer tax while the state has funds available through the Legacy Fund. A similar standalone bill raising vehicle taxes was unanimously rejected by the Senate on Friday
