On May 13th, Walsh County voters will decide whether or not to fund a $42 million new jail in Grafton. The two measures up for vote will ask voters for up to 20 additional mills to help fund a new jail and for three-fourths of a 1% sales tax to help fund construction.

Both questions need to pass for the project to move to the next step. Supporters feel it will be cheaper to build a new jail than to constantly repair the current jail in Walsh County. Opponents of the bill feel that taxes are already high, and that the money would be best used elsewhere.

If the project were to move forward, the new jail would likely be completed in 2027.
