A bill that would increase North Dakota’s interstate speed limit from 75 to 80 mph while raising speeding fines is returning to lawmakers for another vote after passing through a conference committee. House Bill 1298 previously passed both chambers with different versions, primarily disagreeing on fine amounts. A compromise has now been reached in committee. Rep. Ben Koppelman of West Fargo encouraged colleagues to consult law enforcement about whether the compromise is “better than nothing,” noting this would honor the work already done on the legislation. If approved by both the Senate and House in its revised form, the bill will advance to Governor Kelly Armstrong’s desk for final consideration.
