An internal investigation has been launched by the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education to find out if university officials knew about Ray Holmberg’s misconduct and failed to report him. Holmberg is serving a 10-year federal sentence after admitting to traveling to Prague to sexually abuse children. Federal prosecutors also claim he targeted UND students. Tim Mihalick, board chair, promised transparency with his findings. The investigation follows revelations that investigators spoke with several UND-connected individuals. UND President Andrew Armacost expressed being “sickened” by Holmberg’s actions and the inaction of those with “direct information.” Former UND Center for Innovation CEO Bruce Gjovig and UND Alumni Association Chair Jim Poolman have resigned from their positions after being mentioned in investigation documents. Both Gjovig and Poolman denied knowledge of Holmberg’s criminal activities.
