The Jamestown Sun reports that Washington Elementary is closing. Here’s what an educator is doing to celebrate the school’s legacy: To honor Jamestown’s Washington Elementary school as it faces permanent closure next month, three special events are planned to celebrate the school’s service. Third-grade teacher Emma Mickelson has organized the celebrations to honor the school’s legacy dating back to 1929. “I love the community of Washington. I didn’t want us to leave it unsaid,” Mickelson explained, saying she wants to celebrate the impact the school has while helping the students transition to other schools. The first event is a public open house on Tuesday, May 6th, from 5-7 p.m., celebrating Washington’s past with tours and historical talks. Mickelson is seeking memorabilia and has created a Facebook group called “Walking through Washington” to collect memories and photos. A “Farewell Fair” on the 13th will feature carnival activities for all JPS elementary students, while a final program on May 21st will honor current students and staff. Superintendent Rob Lech said the school has been “an integral part of our community” and that its closure, approved in January due to financial projections, necessitates “looking back with appreciation.”
