A 77-year-old Traill County man named Luther Lerfald has been charged with two counts of animal abuse for allegedly shooting his neighbors dogs, killing one and injuring the other. Andy Olson discovered Bauer, his double doodle, had been shot after he got a call in early March that the dog was injured on a nearby road. Bauer survived after treatment at a Fargo veterinary hospital. His second dog, Jake, a golden retriever, had gone missing and was found dead the next day in a shelter belt about a mile from Lerfald’s home, also shot. Court documents say Lerfald initially denied involvement but later admitted to shooting the dogs, claiming they were chasing deer. Olson said both dogs had been wearing perimeter collars, one of which is now missing. “They meant everything–no less than our kids,” said Olson, who promised to “get justice” for his pets. Lerfald faces up to one year in jail if convicted and is scheduled to appear in court in late May.
