Three more measles cases confirmed in Northwestern North Dakota

North Dakota’s Department of Health and Human Services reported three additional measles cases in Williams County on Monday, bringing the state’s total to four. All cases involve unvaccinated individuals, with the three new cases being known contacts of the initially reported child who contracted the illness from an out-of-state visitor. This marks North Dakota’s first measles outbreak in 14 years. All infected individuals are currently isolating to prevent further spread of the highly contagious airborne virus. The CDC has confirmed nearly 1,000 cases nationwide in 2025—more than triple the number seen in all of 2024—amid outbreaks across North America. North Dakota’s MMR vaccination rates currently stand at 81% for toddlers and 90% for kindergartners, below the 95% threshold generally needed to prevent community spread.
