Great Plains Food Bank faces $1.3 million in federal funding cuts

The Great Plains Food Bank, serving North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota, has lost $1.3 million in federal funding. This includes $300,000 from the Emergency Food Assistance Program that was intended for seven summer food deliveries from May to July, plus $1 million from a USDA local food purchase agreement program that would have supported regional farmers and ranchers. Communications Manager Darby Njos reported the organization is now relying heavily on individual donors and additional campaigns to keep shelves stocked while reassuring clients they can still depend on their services. Despite these challenges, the food bank recently received $5 million in state funding toward a new statewide distribution center in Fargo, which will require matching funds. The organization, which has outgrown its current facility established in 2000, doesn’t expect to break ground on the new center until 2027.
