A 22-year-old North Carolina man, Martin Romo, remains jailed after leading police on a high-speed chase through Lincoln Park in Grand Forks on Wednesday evening. The pursuit began when officers attempted to stop Romo for speeding on DeMers Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. Bystander Chance Colgrove, who captured video of the incident, estimated the vehicle was traveling at 60 mph through the park where dozens of people were enjoying warm weather. Officers deployed spike strips which Romo avoided, and eventually stopped the pickup using a PIT maneuver just blocks from the police station. Grand Forks Police Chief Jason Freedman defended the department’s pursuit policy, aiming to keep the balance between public safety and enforcement duties. No injuries were reported, though a stop sign was damaged. Romo made his first court appearance Friday.
