North Dakota has enacted a new tax credit to incentivize businesses to provide child care subsidies for their employees. The goal of this initiative aims to support working families, as child care costs rise and women increase their stake in the workforce. 70% of survey respondents saw child care as an issue. The tax credit allows employers that offer that benefit to write off 50% of the money they contribute to childcare, and can claim up to $1,000 in subsidies per employee. Some supporters say this is an improvement from a 2023 measure that only matched up to $300. Some feel this is not enough. ND Human Rights Coalition Exec. Director Dalton Erickson said this “modest” tax credit only “applies to certain businesses that offer child care stipends, which the majority of workers don’t receive.”
