The North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown is getting a $300 million makeover.
The state Legislature earmarked the over-quarter billion dollars to build a new mental health care facility to replace the aging building that was first built in 1885.
City leaders, hospital administration, and legislators are working on a plan for the new building to have 140 beds on a 30-acre campus next to the current facility. The new hospital would house 18 more people than the old building.
An efficient use of space will be prioritized, with the structure being only about half of the size of the current State Hospital. This smaller space will allow for less staff on site, according to supporters including Jamestown Mayor Dwaine Heinrich.
Construction is expected to begin this August, with completion planned in 2028.
