The North Dakota State Legislature has approved $150,000 to fund planning of passenger rail service through the state.
The state’s ‘Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority’ has advocated for state funding to plan for possible stops in Jamestown, Fargo, Bismarck, Dickinson, and Medora. The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated $11 million in grand funding for the project, and North Dakota will need to eventually allocate a total of $1.1 million in o acquire matching grant funding from the federal government.
The state’s Rail Authority says North Dakota is the only state to so far allocate any money for the project’s matching-fund grant program. The cross-country rail project would start in Chicago and end in Seattle, allowing both passenger and freight service through eight states.
Expected completion is in the mid-2030s.
