Ag Secretary Rollins Outlines Future USDA Initiatives

By Ryan King May 21, 2025 | 7:41 AM

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins visited Nebraska recently to outline the Trump administration’s “Farmers First” initiative, focused on supporting small farmers through USDA reforms.

Key priorities include reorganizing USDA to better serve producers—potentially moving some operations out of Washington, D.C.—and reducing staff to improve efficiency. Rollins also signed a waiver allowing Nebraska to pilot a two-year ban on sugary drinks under the  SNAP program, and additional waivers from other states are under consideration.

Rollins addressed ongoing agricultural labor shortages, advocating for reforms that could allow undocumented workers to legally return under a new system. She also emphasized protecting farmland from solar development and called for Congressional action on estate tax relief and updated farm safety net programs through the reconciliation bill.

USDA also plans to streamline loan access, enhance risk management tools, and update definitions of farm size to reflect current realities.
