Governor Kelly Armstrong has proclaimed May 19–26, 2025, as Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Awareness Week in North Dakota to raise awareness about the severe threat the invasive insect poses to ash trees.
The emerald ash borer, a metallic green beetle from Asia, kills ash trees by cutting off their water and nutrient flow. With hundreds of thousands of ash trees in the state the risk is widespread and serious.
North Dakota agencies, including the Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, and NDSU Extension, have collaborated on public education and monitoring since 2008. Nearly 300 purple EAB traps will soon be deployed in high-risk locations to track the pest. Residents are urged not to disturb these traps and to avoid moving ash wood or firewood from infested areas like LaMoure County.
