Dust Storms Causing Problems for Midwest Producers

By Ryan King May 27, 2025 | 7:44 AM

Dust storms have become a growing problem in the Midwest states, with tragic consequences. While changes in weather patterns may play a role in localized events, research from the University of Illinois indicates that farming practices are a more significant factor in widespread dust events.

The removal of windbreaks like fencerows and the increased use of high-speed, high-efficiency tillage equipment have made soil more vulnerable to wind erosion.

Experts recommend reducing tillage—especially near highways—to help mitigate these risks. Conservation practices like strip-till and no-till not only reduce soil erosion but can also improve crop yields and soil health. Several financial incentives and tools, including the Midwest Cover Crop Council selector and various cost-share programs, are available to help Illinois farmers adopt these practices.
