Jamestown residents may have noticed technicians repainting lines on the roads.
Traffic maintenance technician Shaun Schafer and one other city employee are the sole people responsible for painting curbs, crosswalks, and parking lots like the Civic Center, along with downtown street parking. This is a huge summer job that Schafer undertakes. Schafer is responsible for the city’s painting, signage, streetlights and stoplights. The technician uses the LineLaser 3900. This machine accurately paints lines, then reflective beads are sprayed on top. The team starts with painting arrows, then parking, then curbs.
Each task takes at least a week, and drying time depends on the weather. Due to safety and traffic concerns, painting often takes place at night, which doubles drying time. Schafer tells KSJB that the paint alone costs the city at least $6,200. The city hires Dallmann Services for long-line painting, which includes center lines, double lines, and striping. This costs the city approximately $45,000. Longline painting in downtown Jamestown has started and is expected to finish within the next couple weeks. The wider Jamestown area will be addressed when chip sealing takes place in fall. Schafer advises drivers to be aware of vehicles with beacons, and to refrain from driving on fresh lines.
