The Jamestown Sun reports that the Stutsman County Human Rights Coalition and The Arts Center will host Jamestown’s second annual Juneteenth celebration from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Hansen Arts Park. The free event features a “Family Cookout” theme with African food including jollof rice, T-shirt making, musical performances, and youth presentations about local African American history, including Benjamin Hayes who moved to Jamestown in 1882. Organizers moved the event from Saturday to Thursday to coincide with the Downtown Arts Market and hope to exceed last year’s attendance of 175 people. The celebration aims to foster “intimate conversations” about African American history and culture while honoring Juneteenth, which commemorates June 19, 1865, when federal troops ensured enslaved people in Texas were freed.
