North Dakota raises interstate speed limit to 80 MPH, Highway Patrol addressing concerns

By Payton Gall May 29, 2025 | 4:20 PM

North Dakota will increase its interstate speed limit from 75 to 80 mph this summer, joining eight other states with higher limits. The change comes after a Highway Patrol study found most drivers already travel 80-81 mph on interstates. Officials say states that made similar increases haven’t seen more accidents, though they warn higher speeds require longer stopping distances and reaction times. The new limit is a maximum, and drivers are encouraged to travel at speeds they find comfortable and safe. The change takes effect August 1.
