North Dakota Sheriffs dispute federal ‘Sanctuary County’ designation

By Payton Gall May 30, 2025 | 4:36 PM

The North Dakota Sheriff’s and Deputies Association strongly disputes the Department of Homeland Security’s designation of seven mostly rural North Dakota counties as sanctuary jurisdictions for illegal immigrants. The counties – Billings, Golden Valley, Grant, Morton, Ramsey, Sioux, and Slope – were included on DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s sanctuary list released this week. Sheriffs called the designation “misinformation” and said they work closely with federal partners and ICE. They criticized DHS for not fact-checking or explaining the methodology behind the list, noting they received no communication about how to address the finding. Six of the seven counties voted for Trump by an average margin of nearly 70 points in 2024, with only Sioux County supporting Kamala Harris.
