Thanks to state commodity group sponsorships, North Dakota farmers can test up to four kochia or pigweed samples per operation for free. Growers are advised to collect leaf samples within a week of burndown herbicide applications, focusing on plants that survived treatment.
Proper sample collection, labeling, and timely submission are crucial. Kits are available through NDSU Extension offices or the NAGC website, and results are delivered within seven days. All sample data will remain confidential and only reported at the county level.
Herbicide-resistant kochia continues to be a major challenge for North Dakota farmers due to its adaptability and growing resistance to multiple herbicide groups, including PPO-inhibitors, Glyphosate, and ALS-inhibitors.
