North Dakota ditches outhouses for flush toilets at historic sites in $1.8 million upgrade

The North Dakota Historical Society has nearly completed installing flush toilets at its dozen most popular historic sites, including the recently completed Lawrence Welk childhood home near Bismarck. The project replaces primitive pit toilets with modern facilities costing about $150,000 each, totaling approximately $1.8 million dollars. Officials say the upgrade is essential since many historic sites are remote and visitors often drive long distances to reach them. The Welk homestead restroom was carefully designed to match the color scheme of the historic farm buildings. Two final sites – Whitestone Hill battlefield and Fort Buford military fort – are scheduled for completion by June 30th. The Historical Society manages 60 state historic sites across North Dakota, from museums to an underground nuclear facility.
