A bear was spotted 10 miles north of Jamestown by Buchanan residents Kevin Lorenz and Alicia Lees last week. Witnesses say it appears to be a black bear. Lees caught the bear running on video last Friday night northeast of the Buchanan bridge, and that same day, Lorenz photographed the bear in a field near Buchanan. In claims made on social media, the bear was also spotted at Pipestem and Woodworth sometime within the last two weeks. The bear was last seen Saturday, the 31st, just south of Fried.
In general, when you encounter a black bear, you should: Remain calm. DON’T run from a bear. DON’T climb trees to escape a bear. Ensure the bear has an escape route. Back away when possible. If attacked, immediately fight back. DON’T feed bears.
