North Dakota tribal leaders and state officials met Wednesday for their annual Government-to-Government Conference. The five tribal nations discussed economic development projects like retail centers and wind farms, but expressed concerns about potential federal funding cuts under President Trump.
Turtle Mountain Chair Jamie Azure criticized state lawmakers for questioning his tribe’s casino project, while Spirit Lake’s chairperson called for restored tax exemptions for tribal members. Governor Kelly Armstrong praised the collaboration and highlighted new legislation addressing missing and murdered Indigenous people.
The conference, started by former Governor Doug Burgum, looks to strengthen relationships between the state and tribal nations while working toward shared solutions.
