North Dakota confirms first West Nile virus case of 2025 in Burleigh County

North Dakota has confirmed its first human case of West Nile virus for 2025 in Burleigh County. The virus is spread by mosquito bites and typically found in birds, with symptoms including fever, headache, and body aches. Only 20% of infected people develop symptoms, but one in 150 develop serious illness that can cause brain swelling or death. People over 50 and immunocompromised individuals face higher risks. Health officials recommend wearing light-colored long clothing, staying indoors during peak mosquito hours, using DEET-based repellents, and installing window screens. North Dakota had 38 confirmed cases in 2024, down from 58 in 2023.
