The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is warning drivers to use extra caution around wildlife, especially in rural areas.  Deer and bears are most commonly involved in vehicle crashes, with accidents peaking between 5-7 a.m. and 7-11 p.m.

Officials advise drivers not to swerve when close to hitting an animal, as this increases the risk of more serious crashes like head-on collisions or rolling into ditches. If a collision kills an animal, drivers only need to call 911 if someone is injured or the animal blocks traffic.

Game and Fish biologist Doug Leier warns that seeing one animal cross doesn’t mean the area is safe, urging drivers to stay alert and reduce speed in wildlife crossing areas.
