After a dry start to spring, recent rains have improved crop conditions across much of South Dakota, according to South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal.
Though cold snaps have temporarily stalled growth, temperatures are rising again, and crops like corn and soybeans are starting to take off. VanderWal is optimistic but stresses the importance of periodic rainfall and crop insurance, noting that all farming success hinges on unpredictable weather.
Despite encouraging crop progress, market conditions are far less favorable. VanderWal reports that soybeans are selling well below the cost of production, with corn prices not far behind. For many farmers, profitability now hinges on producing high yields or seeing price recovery.
VanderWal emphasized the need to reestablish strong international trade relationships, urging the federal government to pursue new export agreements.
