The news broke last week that starting pitcher and “ace” on the mound for the Minnesota Twins Pablo Lopez would be missing time for up to 8-12 weeks with a Grade 2 Shoulder Strain. For much of Twins Territory, the news was not ideal, but fans remained optimistic the team could fill in the gaps in the meantime with solid contributors in the starting rotation like Bailey Ober and Joe Ryan, with David Festa, Zebby Matthews, and Chris Paddack on the back end. It couldn’t get worse from there right?
It did…
The Twins announced that after his most recent start against the Athletics, Zebby Matthews another starter for the team, suffered a shoulder strain that will land him on the 15 Day IL joining Pablo Lopez.
Two starters are missing from the rotation with David Festa replacing Lopez, and now the Twins will try to fill in another gap, something they have been doing all season long, whether it was in the pitching rotation, or with the Offense/Defense/Batting Order.
It is speculated that the Twins will be calling up former starter in the rotation Simeon Woods-Richardson from AAA to replace Matthews. Woods-Richardson was sent down in early May after a few sub-par starts and will get another chance to show he belongs in the everyday rotation if he gets called up to replace Matthews.
The Twins will be off on Monday before they return home to start a 3-game series with the Texas Rangers.
