Nearly two-thirds of North Dakota is now free of drought and abnormal dryness, according to June 5th U.S. Drought Monitor data. The state saw significant improvement, especially in western areas where extreme drought was reduced to severe and severe drought dropped to moderate conditions. This turnaround follows near-record May rainfall – Dickinson received 5.9 inches (fifth-highest since 1893) and Bismarck got 5.3 inches (eighth-highest since 1875), both more than 3 inches above normal. As of June 3rd, 63% of North Dakota has normal conditions, 24% is abnormally dry, 11% has moderate drought, and only 2% remains in severe drought, with no extreme or exceptional drought remaining.
